Title: Physical Intervention Training
Aim: To meet the needs of the organisations who work with clients who have unique care and support plans and to train delegates in the use of physical interventions and empower them with strategies which promote alternative behaviors.
Who should attend: Delegates who have to deal with challenging behaviours and may have to use physical interventions
Key elements: The course will cover
- Guidance for Restrictive Physical Interventions and Code of Practice
- A focus on relevant national guidance and legislation
- How an appropriate values base impacts on inter-personal relationships
- Decision making and ownership, focus on accountability
- Gender and cultural diversity – Why this may affect the use of physical contact or intervention
- Awareness of how age and physical development affects the use of physical contact or intervention
- When are physical interventions appropriate?
- ‘Escorting’, ‘touching’ and ‘holding’ what are the differences?
- Having the appropriate response for different levels of behaviour
- Keeping safe by avoiding potentially dangerous postures and positions
- Avoiding injury and fatality
- De-briefing and report writing – following procedures
Objectives: By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:
- Use of two person team
- Use of three person team
- Use of four person team
- Use of five person team
- Briefing on different roles within the team
- Taking patient to ground (face down- Taking patient to ground (face up)
- Control of legs
- Standing the patient
- De-escalation of holds on floor, face down
- De-escalation of holds on floor, face up
- Seating the patient
- Entry into/exit from rooms, doorways
- Holding techniques on bed
- Levels of holds from level 1 to 4,
- Briefing on use of reasonable force, with contextualisation into clinical settings
- Briefing on risk factors in restraint, including positional asphyxia etc
- Briefing on appropriate and ethical care of person being held in restraint, including injuries and unconsciousness etc
