Escaping from the mount position – Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Martial Arts
August 24th, 2009

In a physical confrontation, being taken to the ground can create a serious safety challenge. Understanding how to respond safely when restrained or placed in a vulnerable position is an important part of personal safety and physical intervention awareness.

This article explores the mount position and demonstrates how principles from Gracie Jiu Jitsu can help people understand body positioning, leverage and controlled escape movements.

What Is the Mount Position?

The mount position is a common grappling position where one person is positioned on top of another while facing them.

From this position, the person underneath may have limited movement and can find it difficult to create space or regain control.

Understanding how body weight, positioning and movement affect an individual’s ability to respond is an important element of realistic self-protection training.

Here is a quick clip, I did with judo’s Tony Devine, on how to escape from the mount position using the most effective martial art system Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
